Locals help dragon boat team to impressive finish

A quartet of Luneburg County breast cancer survivors have helped the Bosom Buddies dragon boat team to an impressive seventh-place finish at the International Dragon Boat Races held recently in Peterborough, Ontario.

Team president Anne Matthiasson of Maders Cove said a total of 72 teams from around the world took part in the event, which was held at Little Lake at Del Crary Park from June 11 to 13.

Rain can't dampen spirits of dragon boat paddlers

The sky was grey and cloudy, rain fell over the crowds and people were bundled up in jackets and wool socks to keep warm on Saturday as the wind whipped over the choppy waters of Little Lake.

But the International Dragon Boat Festival participants — some of whom had taken a 17-hour flight to get here — seemed to ignore the weather and revel in the fact they were together and still having fun on Day Two of the festival that drew 73 teams from Canada, the U.S., England, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Italy.

It was 11 years ago that Nova Scotia breast cancer survivors Margo Kleiker and Sharon Driscoll came together to support each other and move forward with their shared vision of an active lifestyle, post-cancer. Born of that union was Bosom Buddies, a dragon boating team completely made up of breast cancer survivors. While Kleiker succumbed to her battle with cancer in 2003, Driscoll is still part of the team, which, in the 11 years since its creation, has grown to boast more than 70 members.
