Bosom Buddies get $5,000 boost

A group of breast cancer survivors known as the Bosom Buddies of Nova Scotia will be able to keep their three dragon boats afloat thanks to the generous support from a local bank.

Elmsdale Scotiabank presented a cheque for $5,000 to five of the more than 70-member group, which comprises rowers from Dartmouth; Lantz; Halifax; and Eastern Passage. The money came through the bank’s match program where they donate $1,000 per employee that assists at a fundraising event; in this case there were five employees who helped at an auction, held Nov. 2 at the Rodeo Lounge.

Branch Manager Jayne Morash—along with representatives Karen Tingley, Jared Dapena, and Nancy Logan—made the presentation on Nov. 13, at the Elmsdale location.

Bosom Buddies of Nova Scotia is a group of breast cancer survivors who are real examples of life after breast cancer by paddling together in a dragon boat.

The team was created in 1998, and since that time the group has travelled across Canada to compete in dragon boat festivals, said team member Debbie Pottie. “For most of the group, the team camaraderie and support of each other is as important as winning the next race,” said Pottie. “We have already won our race. “This group of survivors is committed to each other. They chose to paddle as a dragon boat team to increase their self-esteem, while building their physical and emotional health.”

Members of Bosom Buddies of Nova Scotia range in age from 25 to 83-years-old. The team paddles on Lake Banook three times a week in the spring, summer, and fall, while a second crew from the South Shore paddles out of Mahone Bay.

At the auction, the team raised a total of $14,426 with the support from family, friends, and the Elmsdale Scotiabank.
